Wolfville Nova
Scotia
While travelling around Canada's Atlantic provinces, what a treat it is
to stumble upon a restaurant that serves really good food. Quite often
the menu might be as simple as boiled lobster or fresh catch of the day. These small town restaurants can give you memories to last a lifetime. However, if you happen to live near the sea side eating establishment, the limited menu doesn't tempt you to eat there regularly. Residents of Wolfville Nova Scotia, however, have many fine restaurants from which to choose. Chef Michael Howell and wife Mary Harwell have created an oasis of fine dining in the centre of town. Chef Michael is no stranger to fine cuisine, he is an honours graduate of the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. His last job was Executive Chef of the Green Turtle Club in Abaco, Bahamas. He was also promoted to the grade "Maitre Grillardin" of the international gourmet society, La Chaine des Rotisseurs. His talent has not gone unnoticed as En Route magazine named the Tempest as one of the best 50 new restaurants in Canada. The restaurant is housed in a historic building (Circa 1860) but the interior has been transformed into high tech rooms that would be at home in any city. The Tempest also makes the
drinking of wine a festive occasion. There
is a good selection of wines available by the glass so everyone at the
table is able to drink the wine of their choice. The glasses are also a
good size rather than the tiny ones used by lesser establishments.
My partner and I recently had occasion to taste Chef Michael's creations. To start, we were offered an amuse-gueule of Martock Glen smoked venison and wild boar sausage with Asiago cheese crust, on a bed of braised leeks with brunoise of peppers, chili lime coulis - superb! My partner's main course was Martock Glen quail stuffed with spinach, goat cheese Feta and toasted walnuts, with a lavender honey and quail demi reduction and wild rice pilaf. She rated it A+. I had slow roasted Martock Glen rack of wild boar with a thyme/ boar reduction, apple and caramelized onion relish and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. What a wonderful meal! If you drop in for lunch, I suggest you try the fish and chips. You don't get a big slab of fish. You get a piece of fish you will be talking about for years. Visitors to Wolfville should not miss this eating experience. The Tempest had a serious fire. They have reopened and are now bigger and better. |
