Rideau
Canal

The Rideau
Canal
was constructed in six years from 1826 to 1832.
Here is the set of locks leading to the Ottawa River.

The man in charge of the construction was Lieutenant Colonel John Bye.
. . .

The canal was built to allow travel from Kingston
to Ottawa away from the border of the United States.
The present canal is still hand-operated as it was in the time when it was
constructed by Lieutenant Colonel John Bye.

The final locks drop vessels down a considerable height from the canal
to the Ottawa River.

The canal was never needed for military purposes
but is used every summer by thousands of pleasure craft.
