 Many people who visit Perugia are aware that this old Etruscan city predates the Roman Empire . The streets in the historic centre are very narrow and almost impossible for large vehicles to navigate. In Etruscan times, this gate was only as high as the impost of the arch. . . .  This gate is called Porta Eburnea. The stones you see here were set before the Roman Empire was created.  The city fathers of Perugia got their money"s worth when they had this gate constructed. How many modern projects are expected to last over two thousand years?  This view shows the wall that enclosed Perugia in Etruscan times. The arch was added to the gate in the middle ages. . . .  The City of Perugia, the capital of Umbria, is really worth a visit. The construction has created a lot of dust, I had to clean this sign with bottled water so it could be photographed.
