Carcassonne Walls By
Night

These massive walls
were built
to protect the Cathar people from the Pope's army.
. . .

When you
enter this gate you see that the two walls make it almost
impossible
to take Carcassonne. Once troops scaled the ouside wall they
would have
no protection from the defenders on the higher inside wall.

As you
see, between the walls of Carcassonne there is nowhere to hide.
. . .

The only
way an attacking army could take the town
was to lay
seige and starve the garrisson.

Despite
the military reason for the walls, they make a fabulous place
to visit now.
